Nexus - FIEA Capstone Project

Nexus is a desperate supernatural adventure set in the ruins of a forgotten civilization. You play as Chris Reynolds, and archaeologist who is given superhuman abilities and must use them to escape ancient ruins by solving puzzles, defeating enemies, and traversing the environment.

About the Project

  • Project began in December 2010 and will be completed and shown at Siggraph in August of 2011
  • Team consists of 17 members: 7 Producers, 4 Programmers, and 6 Artists
  • Uses the Unreal engine

My Responsibilities and Contributions

  • Implemented a survival mode mini game in 2 days using Kismet.
  • Saved 20-25 fps and cut down triangle draw count by 90% in a scenic canyon view by replacing a lot of geometry with a sky dome using a render of the scene as a material
  • Built our primary puzzle mechanic of lighting objects on fire with other already lit objects in Kismet, Unreal's visual scripting environment, which allowed our programmers to have more time to work on other important tasks.
  • Used Unreal's physics editor to make a ragdoll of our spider enemy and a rope that we used in our primary puzzle.
  • Was the go-to producer when there was a technical problem, particularly if Kismet wasn't working properly.
  • Was in charge of bringing the roof down in our primary level.
  • Used UnrealScript to write my own Kismet event when there was something I needed that wasn't there already.
